Course Description: The course studies indigenous people in Brazil from an anthropological perspective. The objective of the course is to present an introduction to the contemporary situation of Brazilian Indians and to ethnological studies of indigenous people in Brazil. The course analyzes indigenous social systems, public policy, and indigenous activism. Particular attention is given to the transition of Brazilian Indians from objects of study to subjects with rights who produce knowledge about themselves. Anthropological theory and international discourse related to indigenous peoples inform the topics studied in this class.
