Course Description: This course examines some of the most important historical processes in Latin America of the twentieth century. It addresses issues such as race, gender, social glass, globalization, state formation, and nation building. This course is divided into four parts. In the first part, it looks at the inclusion of Latin America to global markets through mono export economies and the relationship between the economic order and authoritarian forms of government. Part two covers the emergence of nationalism and populism during the first decades of the twentieth century. Part three explores the Cold War era and the different forms of reformist mobilization as a reaction to counterinsurgency that militarized Latin American societies, weakening democracy and causing prolonged civil wars. In part four, the course discusses current challenges in Latin America include persistent inequality, drug trafficking, environmental crisis, and violence. .
