Course Description: This course discusses the primary theories about the formation of the working class and trade unions in Brazil. It examines the various union modalities practiced in Brazil such as anarchist, corporatist, "peleguismo", "amarelos", pragmatic, and revolutionary. This course teaches about the major labor and trade union laws and the creation of the Consolidation of Labor Laws (CLT). Topics include: Brazilian union structure and its financing before and after the 1988 constitution; work justice; Brazilian unionism in the First Republic, the first Vargas government, democracy of 1946, and military dictatorship; rural unions; trade union relations with the Unified Workers' Central (CUT) and Workers' Party (PT); gender and trade unions; perspectives and trends of trade unions and the labor movement in Brazil and the world; union and labor reform in Brazil and trends in the labor market.
