Course Description: This course explores the emergence of historical ecology and environmental history. It looks at key concepts of historical ecology such as landscape, territory, culture, and social metabolism. This course discusses the arrival of man to the Americas and the evolution of ecosystems. Other topics include: methodology of historical ecology; use and transformation of ecosystems by human action; current issues in historical ecology-- biological invasion, biodiversity, extinction, use of water resources, agriculture, food chains, and socio-ecological systems; historical ecology and urban ecosystems.
