Course Description: This course provides a critical analysis of the recent history of Brazil, highlighting the collective experiences of political and social participation and their conflicting dimensions. It discusses some of the major historiographical issues concerning the 1964 coup, and seeks to present the historical experience of the dictatorship in its complexity. It also examines the peculiarities of the transition process in the consolidation of the "New Republic", the 1988 Constitution, and the advances and setbacks faced in the first decades of the twenty-first century. The course reflects on the Brazilian situation, taking into account experiences of dictatorships in Latin America and other various transition processes in addition to US-Brazil relations.
