Course Description: This course focuses on the origins and development of Brazilian sociological thought, and provides a sociological analysis of Brazilian society. Special attention is given to the principal diagnoses and interpretations that have been made of Brazilian society during the 19th and 20th centuries. Topics covered include concepts of culture, national identity and nationalism; sociology and state planning; sociology and developmentalism; public intellectuals; intellectual collectives and sociological activism.
