Course Description: This course provides a study of South American history within the context of Portuguese colonization. Discussion topics include: black and Indian slavery; hierarchy and social identity of the Catholic Church in the colony; political emancipation and emergence of the imperial state; formation of a nation and social tensions; slavery crisis and end of monarchic regime; historical experience of the Brazilian Republic; authoritarianism/democracy and acceptance/exclusion in Brazilian society.
