Course Description: This course presents the theoretical debate in the social sciences concerning concepts of poverty, social, ethnic, and racial inequalities, and social exclusion, with special attention to these problems as they exist in Brazilian society. It discusses the main milestones in the history of poverty in Western society such as social welfare of the nineteenth century and the advent of the welfare state and its crisis. Topics include: urban poverty, social policies and the criminalization of poverty, and societal acceptance of social inequality.
