Course Description: This course reflects on culture, cultural diversity, and cultural dynamics through the themes of gender and sexuality. It discusses studies on these themes with a focus on characterizations within Brazilian society and culture. Topics include: woman, nature, and culture; conceptualizing gender; gender and hierarchy; symbolic domination and gender differences; problematizing sexuality; sexuality and gender; family, sexual identity, and gender identity; gender and sexuality in primitive societies; processes of construction of gender, sexuality, and corporality; nature and culture-- differentiation of gender and the sexual division of labor; individualism and feminism; separation of the public and the private.
