Course Description: This course offers a study of Brazilian architecture as well as architecture of neighboring countries. It looks at the influence that various groups have had on Brazilian and Latin American architecture including Portuguese, Spanish, Africans, French, Germans, and Italians. Topics include: industrialization and artisanal continuity; critical regionalism; Ferroconcrete and its role in Brazilian architecture; Brasilia and political architectural expression; tension between ethical and aesthetic concerns; social architectural dilemmas.
