Course Description: This course integrates the political and social history of Brazil from the 16th through the 21st century. The first part of the course covers the Portuguese colonization of America with its commercial practices and slavery; the colonial regions and the construction of colonial identities; political emancipation and the imperial state; and the crisis of slavery and the Republican projects. The second half of the course turns to the historical experience of the Brazilian Republic; the relations between society and state and the formation of the capitalist order; other political and social projects; authoritarianism and democracy.
