Course Description: This course provides a study of the meanings and values of literature and culture through history and the connections of literature with other areas of cultural production including the visual arts, music, film and photography. It examines the links between literature, culture and nationality, in particular the different interpretations of the "Brazilian culture," implications of its appropriation, and the Brazilian social imagination. Other topics include: cultural modernity; literature, culture and the challenge of difference; modernist reversal of the cultural construction of "Brazilian-ness"; contemporary views on culture.
