Course Description: The structure of words: stems and affixes; inflection, derivation and compounding. Conditions and principles, the interaction of morphology with phonology and syntax. Material to be drawn from various languages. Morphology is generally defined as the study of the internal structure of words. In this course, focus is on morphological analyses from the standpoint of generative grammar. Its primary aims are to introduce a wide range of word structures found in natural language, practice in analyzing such structures and in describing them formally and insightfully, and to discuss some of the theoretical issues within the model of generative grammar.
