Course Description:
The course introduces students to important concepts in sociological theory and research in order to understand and analyze complex social phenomena. At the end of the course the student is able to: Understand main concepts and methods used in sociology; situate these theories and models in a wider interdisciplinary context; assess the common ground and complementarity of theories and models in sociology. More broadly, students practice reading, presenting, discussing, and critiquing scientific work in sociology. The course consists of lectures and tutorials. During the lectures, the lecturer presents key aspects of sociology. Students are expected to prepare for the lectures by reading the required readings in advance and actively participate in the lectures. The aims of the tutorials are as follows: 1) To engage with a wider range of scholarship than presented during the lectures; 2) To gain insight into the practical aspects of social science research; 3) To learn how to present sociological research; 4) To learn how to discuss and critique sociological research.
