Course Description: In this course, emphasis is placed on complex forms of syntax, grammar, and, in particular, on the uses of the subjunctive, the conditional, the historical past, the sequence of tenses, combined pronouns, and idiomatic expressions. There are graded homework exercises three times per week. Students also read and discuss some passages in contemporary Italian literature. The course is designed to take students through the level of Italian 5 in the UC quarter system and is conducted entirely in Italian. The final grade is based on an oral and written mid-term, three in-class written compositions, and an oral and written final examination. Texts include: PONTI, an excercise book, and a lab manual.
