Course Description: This course offers an in-depth examination of the various formal dimensions of film such as cinematography, editing, mise-en-scene, acting, costume and sound, as well as the stylistic use of these techniques in the cinematic form and narration. The course also offers a survey of film history as well as important international movements, including early cinema, Russian film montage, Weimar cinema, neo-realism, film noir, recent European cinema and various aspects of "world cinema." Students are required to view at least two films a week: a historical, classical film closely related to the corpus of films discussed in Bordwell and Thompson's book Film Art and a related, more contemporary film which is, when possible, selected from the available screenings in theaters in Maastricht.
