Course Description: This beginning Chinese language course teaches pronunciation and basic oral drills, basic Chinese grammar; Chinese characters, basic vocabulary building, and beginning composition writing skills. By the end of the course, students are able to understand and use everyday expressions and basic phrases; introduce themselves and others, and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know, and things they like to do; and to communicate with people who speak Chinese slowly and clearly. All classes are conducted in Chinese. Mandarin phonetic symbols and Pinyin spelling are used to indicate the pronunciation of characters. Reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension are given equal emphasis in each class and student performance is evaluated accordingly. Required Texts: Practical Audio-Visual Chinese Vol.1 through 4; Everyday Chinese Vol. 1 and 2; Practical Chinese Reading and Writing I; Modern Chinese I and II; Modern Chinese II.
