Course Description: This course consists of five major parts: pronunciation, characters, vocabulary, grammar, and rhetoric. Students gain systematically the basic language knowledge of modern Chinese and thus improve their ability in using modern Chinese. Pronunciation involves understanding the pinyin romanization system and the theory of initials, vowels, and tones. The teacher focuses on correcting students’ pronunciation. Other topics include introduction of the specialty of Chinese characters, the history of Chinese characters’ developments and evolution, the structures of of Chinese characters; vocabulary with emphasis on types of phrases, morphology (such as ways of classifying words); grammar, syntax (such as analysis of the elements and construction of sentences), and analyses of the words and sentences’ structures; and basic Chinese rhetoric.
