Course Description: This course consists of five major parts: pronunciation, characters, vocabulary, and grammar of modern Chinese. Students systematically gain basic language knowledge of modern Chinese. Pronunciation involves understanding the pinyin romanization system and the theory of initials, vowels, and tones. Other topics include introduction to the history of the developments and evolution of Chinese characters, structures of Chinese characters; vocabulary with emphasis on types of phrases, morphology (such as ways of classifying words); grammar, syntax (such as analysis of the elements and construction of sentences), and analyses of the words and sentence structures.
