Course Description: The course, with Chinese history as its guide, gives a systematic introduction to Chinese classical literarature including important writers, books, and literary activities. It provides an overview of the development of ancient literature and the literary forms of artistic expression and a basic familiarity with key literary works. Meanwhile, it cultivates students' grounding in Chinese and consciousness of sinology. The main focus of the fall semester is literature before the Tang Dynasty. Text: A Selection of Ancient Chinese Literature, Guanghe LIU and Junyuan YE. Assessment: midterm and final exams.
