Course Description: This course is designed for intermediate level international students. Students read selections of representative classic works in modern Chinese literature, primarily short stories, along with related history and criticism of the works. Students augment their Chinese language skills while developing their knowledge and appreciation of modern Chinese literature. Specific reading selections vary from year to year. New vocabulary items can be found in the DICTIONARY OF MODERN CHINESE, but certain technical vocabulary will be glossed; thus, the course also introduces students to the use of standard reference tools in modern Chinese. Assessment: midterm and a final exam. Text: SELECTED READINGS IN MODERN CHINESE LITERATURE, edited by Jin Ge and Liu Beibei. Additional references are HISTORY OF MODERN CHINESE LITERATURE by Tang Tao; COMPREHENSIVE HISTORY OF CHINESE LITERATURE by Zhang Jiong; and 30 YEARS OF CHINESE MODERN CHINESE by Qian Liqun.
