Course Description: This course examines the origin and progression of the major concepts of Darwin's theory of evolution. It explains the biological diversity seen today on earth using the mechanisms of biological evolution. The course covers the theories of Darwin and Lamarck, the types of natural selection, adaptation, the neutral theory of molecular evolution, the origin and extinction of a species, punctuated equilibrium, and reconstruction of the evolutionary tree, as well as major events in the history of biological evolution. Assessment: In-class quizzes (20%), midterm paper (30%), final exam (50%).
