Course Description: This course examines the language of literary studies with a focus on the issues that arise in the South African context. The study of literature includes texts from Southern Africa and other parts of the world. Students write essays on such topics as post-colonial poetry and black consciousness literature. Texts: Mark Twain, THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN; Tennessee Williams, STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE; Chinua Achebe, ANTHILLS OF THE SAVANNAH; Athol Fugard, BOESMAN AND LENA; and NORTON ANTHOLOGY OF POETRY. Assessment: coursework (50%) and a final exam (50%).
