Course Description: What is ‘literature’ and how does it work? How can we read and write critically? What can close attention to plays, novels and poems tell us? How can we trace the shift from ‘English literature’ to ‘literature in English’ in a 21st-century world? This course introduces a range of critical tools and methods for reading and writing about texts in the most interesting and thought-provoking ways possible. Topics include literary and rhetorical terms; basic issues in literary studies; different literary genres, including the novel, poetry and drama; and different kinds of critical writing. Texts: Mark Twain, THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN; Tennessee Williams, STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE; Chinua Achebe, ANTHILLS OF THE SAVANNAH; Athol Fugard, BOESMAN AND LENA; and NORTON ANTHOLOGY OF POETRY. Assessment: coursework (50%) and a final exam (50%).
