Course Description: This course provides an examination of culture and history in contemporary Buenos Aires. It explores various expressions of culture, including canonical forms (painting, architecture, sculpture, etc.), as well as other types of plastic, visual and textual art, including film, photography, newspapers, comic books and graffiti, as well as various genres of indigenous and popular music, such as rock, pop, cumbia, and tango, among others. Topics covered include: national identity; migratory movements; politics and society; neoliberalism and the city; and public space. Assessment is based on writing assignments, a midterm, and a final exam.
