Course Description: Twentieth century Taiwanese literature comprises a unique and special part of the Chinese literary canon. Materials for the class include renowned works of Taiwanese literature as well as literary criticism and analytical works. The class particularly focuses on how Taiwanese history and Taiwan’s unique political situation affects literature. Texts: CHEN Kongli, The History of Taiwan; LI Dengxiang, History of Taiwanese Literature; WU Zhuoliu, The Orphan of Asia; BAI Xianyong, Taipei People; XUE Yi, ed. Selected Works of Chen Ying; LI Ang, Experiments in Love; ZHU Tianwen. End of the Century Magnificence; ZHU Tianxin, All Ancient; ZHANG Dachun, Listening to Father; LU Yijun, Xixia Hotel; QI Bang'ai, Juliu River. Assessment: midterm book report (40%), final exam (60%).
