Course Description: This course is a study of how violence, in a range of forms and contexts, has become a central feature of international relations today. It explores how civil war conflicts are a source of mass carnage and pose major dilemmas for the international community. It also identifies patterns in the genesis and stimulation of civil wars and attempts to identify solutions for minimizing the damage they do in the context of existing geostrategic considerations. The course examines the major theories of civil war and analyzes four case studies of conflict in Rwanda, Columbia, Darfur, and Timor.
