Course Description: This course looks at films from the perspective of history, cultural studies, and film studies. Students view and analyze seven films produced in China between the 1920s and 1990s and learn how to use visual sources to understand historical phenomena. More specifically, the course examines a number of important themes in modern Chinese history. The themes include class, gender, family, nation, revolution, tradition, and the people. The class analyzes important issues in modern and contemporary China; provides an introduction to the development of Chinese film history; and teaches methods to analyze and interpret visual materials. Students screen films and discuss the film and related issues. Most films have subtitles in English. Assessment: presentation (20%), quiz (20%), final exam (60%).
