Course Description: This course explores Chinese classical thought, Chinese tradition and culture. It introduces some ancient schools of thought, mainly Confucianism and Daoism. These schools all have had tremendous and lasting impacts on the formation of the Chinese mind and continue to shape the Chinese outlook on life in the future. The course introduces representative thinkers from each of these schools. Students are required to read the classical texts and discuss several fundamental philosophical issues. The comparative approach is highly encouraged in this class. Course topics include: Confucius and the ANALECTS; Mencius and the MENCIUS; Xunzi and the XUNZI; Lao Zi and the DAODE JING; Zhuang Zi and the INNER CHAPTERS. Assessment: attendance and participation (10%), presentation of 2,000-3,000 word paper (40%), final exam (50%).
