Course Description: This course explores a number of themes in relation to environmental governance, focusing both on global challenges and the more specific Chinese context. The course gives an inside perspective on environmental governance in China while also situating Chinese policies in relation to international treaties, regimes and other new forms of global environmental governance. With more than 1.3 billion people, China is naturally at the center of international debates about climate, energy and sustainability. Accelerating land transformation, rapid urbanization and a carbon-intensive export-oriented economy have already made the country the single largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. Confronted with the dual task of developing its national economy and protecting its ecological environment, China has in recent years witnessed a number of transitions within its system of environmental governance.
