Course Description: "Journey to the West" is one text with a deep influence on Chinese culture. Since the Tang and Song dynasties until the present, this story has been presented in cultural forms such as opera, folk customs, novels, paintings, films, and television. The course covers each of these cultural texts as reflections of the material culture and spiritual temperament of each era under discussion. Taking "Journey to the West" as the main theme, this course explores the correlation between these different texts and different faces of Chinese culture. Text: Xiyouji (JOURNEY TO THE WEST). Assessment: quizzes (10%), midterm homework assignment (20%), term paper (70%)
