Course Description: Suicide has already become a world-wide societal phenomenon, one which grows more severe by the day and has become a major cause of death, like cancer. The World Health Organization and many countries have started research into the causes of suicide, meaning that "suicide studies" has become an academic discipline. Although Chinese society realized the seriousness of the issue of suicide, still knowledge of suicide and suicide preventions remains lacking. Based on the cutting edge of global research into suicide, this course presents the fundamentals of suicide studies. Topics to be addressed include the theory of suicide, suicide studies research methodology, comparative understandings of suicide around the world, and methods and policies for suicide prevention. Assessment: Homework assignments (16%), midterm report (34%), final essay or literature review (50%).
