Course Description:
This course uses a comparative anthropological approach to examine the socio-cultural aspects of health, disease, and health care. The course explores health-related beliefs and behavior in Western and non-Western societies as well as traditional healers and transmission of health-related knowledge. The course is particularly concerned with comparative social-cultural understandings of HIV/AIDS, and includes a small field research exercise project that is likely to focus on that issue as it manifests in southern Africa. Assessment: essays, projects, class tests (50%), final exam (50%).
