Course Description: This course improves ability to communicate well in various public contexts; develops skills necessary for effective public speaking such as critical thinking, listening skills, the organization of ideas and thoughts into a presentation, and effective delivery skills; explores how to observe and analyze the public communication of others; and enhances the ability to recognize nonverbal cues in self and others as well as their possible and probable meanings. The course also covers topics such as the speech communication process, managing anxiety, selecting a topic, and analyzing the audience. Text: THE ART OF PUBLIC SPEAKING by Stephen E. Lucas. Assessment: class attendance, class participation, homework assignments, and peer evaluations (30%), three in-class presentations (50%), and final exam (20%).
