Course Description: This course develops knowledge about languages in Europe as well as an understanding of the language situations in and language policies of particular countries. The course analyzes European languages and language policies in historical, geographical, cultural, social, and political context and deepens understanding of the language policies of international institutions such as the EU. Emphasis is placed on comparing approaches to managing multilingualism in different countries and regions in Europe. Reference: LANGUAGE AND NATIONALISM IN EUROPE by Stephen Barbour and Cathie Carmichael. Assessment: class attendance and participation (25%), midterm exam (25%), and language situation project including paper and presentation (50%).
