Course Description: This course focuses on the study of religions, moral and legal systems of the sociocultural history of Hinduism and Buddhism. Hinduism is examined through the teachings of Brahmanism and Saivism, and Buddhism through the teachings of original Buddhism and Mahayana Buddhism, while analyzing translated iconic documents of Hinduism and Buddhism. The ultimate goal of the course is to understand the structure of Sanskrit (that correspond to Latin in Christianity and Arabic in Islam) religions and the role of them in the making of the so-called South Asian civilization. Assessment: class attendance (30%), midterm paper (35%), final paper (35%).
