Course Description: This course takes the critical concept of gender to examine the construction and deconstruction of the idea of femininity in contemporary texts. It explores the concept of gender identity as a crucial element as a critical weapon against patriarchal narratives of national identity, as well as a means of illuminating alternative forms of politicized literature. Topics covered include: the first feminism; Marxism and feminism; feminism and the subversion of identity; queer theory and the end of identity; attempts to politicize pleasure in Latin America; gender, race, class; gender and cultural traditions; narration and identity; transgenderism and the politics of difference; intersex politics; contemporary queer avant-gardes; pop culture, subjectivity and technology.
