Course Description: This course provides students with a solid grounding in phonetics and phonology, the scientific disciplines concerned with speech sounds and sound systems in human language. Examples are taken from languages around the world including the Indigenous languages of Australia. Particular attention is paid to the sounds of English as it is spoken in Australia and elsewhere. The course provides a foundation for study in related fields such as speech pathology, ESL and foreign language teaching, as well as advanced study in linguistics. Students develop practical skills in listening to, transcribing and analyzing speech sounds and sound patterns. Related areas such as historical language change, social variation, child language acquisition and second language learning are contextualised within students’ broader introduction to human speech sounds and their systematic organisation in language.
