Course Description: This course explores the visual culture of China and Japan in the global Early Modern era, from the mid-17th century to ca. 1900, focusing particularly on issues of vision and visuality in the Modern ‘turn’. The role of cultural production in forging links within and across societies, and the relationship of art with political, social, technological and economic change are especially emphasized. In this course, students engage with visual culture in a broad sense, encompassing painting, print, photography, and film, as well as the urban environments in which these works were created and consumed.
