Course Description: This course offers an understanding of the different ways that music functions as part of society. It shows the evolution of music and explores how music has been shaped by and has itself shaped; analyzes different works of music in different genres and contexts; and examines the cultures in which music exists. Emphasis is placed on music's interpersonal effects on society such as gender roles, belief systems, and intellectual property. Texts: Readings are assigned from various books such as MUSICS IN EVERYDAY LIFE by Tia DeNora, and GLOBAL GOES LOCAL: POPULAR CULTURE IN ASIA edited by Timothy J. Craig and Richard King. Assessment: class attendance and participation, writing assignments, presentation, and final exam.
