Course Description: This course develops an awareness of how language is used to persuade and manipulate people. The course look at rhetoric and and how to recognize how a range of rhetorical devices are employed in hit songs and successful advertisement campaigns, headlines and tweets, political speeches, and film titles. The use of rhetorical devices in making language more persuasive is practiced. Assessment: class attendance and participation, homework assignments (70%), and final paper (30%).
