Course Description: This course examines historical aspects of musical traditions in Asian countries with reference to modern performance styles. Students study a wide variety of countries from Turkey in the west to China and Korea in the east. They develop ways of describing these musical traditions, understand them in their cultural context, and how to relate these traditions to Western European and Japanese musical traditions. Some books are assigned as references such as CHINESE MUSIC by Jin Jie, and JOURNEYS OF A SUFI MUSICIAN by Kudsi Erguner. Assessment: class attendance (10%), presentation (20%), midterm exam (20%), 1,500 to 2,000-word essay (30%), and final exam (20%).
