Course Description: This is a selective culture course for advanced students. Great historic changes have taken place in China in the 20th century, and all these changes and conflicts between the New China and the Old China reflected in people’s minds and their impacts upon the society have been embodied in a vivid way in modern literary works. Reading these works, therefore, is not only a way of improving one’s Chinese proficiency, but is also a process of getting closer to the modern Chinese history. The selected works in this course are mainly novels, but prose and poetry are also read. Text: Selected Modern and Contemporary Chinese Novels (unpublished) written by the teacher of the course, and subsidiary materials. Assessment: midterm exam, final exam, homework and class performance constitute.
