Course Description: Folklore is a science about traditional cultures. It is about all different life phenomena happening around us. This course introduces concepts, theories, typologies and research methods related to folklore. With new research theories, the course focuses on the explanation of myth, stories, legends, adages, folk songs, ballads, epics, folk dances, folk arts, folk architecture, folk accessories, and folk customs. It introduces students to new studies of folklore. Main contents include the origin and development of folklore; the functions of folklore; folklore and culture; customs and folklore; folk festivals; witchery and superstitions; life etiquette; folk games; folk dramas; physical folklore; folk architecture; folk arts; folk diet and food; folk accessories and so on. Text: course reader. Assessment: participation and discussion, oral presentation, papers.
