Course Description: This course is a survey of American history from the Age of Discovery to the Obama administration. Although a special emphasis is placed upon the nineteenth century, when such historical landmarks as westward expansion, the Civil War, and Reconstruction occurred, the course offers a general narrative of the major themes and events of American history. Examining American history from its origins as a British colony to its emergence as the world’s superpower provides knowledge of other parts of the world as well. Text: GIVE ME LIBERTY! AN AMERIAN HISTORY by Eric Foner (New York: W.W Norton & Company, 2014); and additional reading distributed in class. Assessment: midterm exam (35%), final exam (35%), participation in class discussions (30%).
