Course Description: This course examines the structure of the family in modern day Japan, with a focus on gender roles within the family. It traces the change in the role of women in the family as Japan continues to become an aging society and more women enter the work force. The course also examines how the concept of “Men in the workplace and women in the home” came about and how it affects Japanese society today. Other topics of discussion include marriage and raising children. Assessment: written papers (30%), final exam (70%).
