Course Description: This course aims to broadly understand unique history and politics of Southeast Asia. Both regional and cultural perspectives are co-relatedly examined throughout the sessions. The course first deals with overall regional history of international relations. Based on such understanding, it later examines each historical background and contemporary politics of individual countries. Throughout the course, two main questions are discussed: Why did Southeast Asian countries agree to institutionalize regional cooperation, and in what way does Southeast Asian regionalism reconcile with each country‚Äôs nationalism or sovereignty. Assessment: papers (60%), and participation and quizzes (40%).
