Course Description: This course surveys major issues in development economics, with emphasis on theoretical development and recent policy experience. Topics include extreme poverty, hunger, low-levels of education, gender inequality, environment degradation, high fertility and child labor. Various issues facing developing countries, theoretical and empirical research regarding these issues, and policy responses to tackle these problems are examined. Text: Michael P. Todaro and Stephen C. Smith, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. Assessment: class attendance (10%), term paper (30%), group presentation (20%), final exam (40%).
