Course Description: This course offers a study of the vital and various roles that translation, media, and technology play as agents of cultural change. It explores the different types of translation practices that are associated with various media cultures. Topics covered include: connections between media theory and translation theory and practice; film translation and adaptation; dubbing and subtitles; as well as manga and comics translation. Through comparative analysis and translation practice, the course provides a deeper understanding of what takes place during the process of media translation. Texts: Some books are assigned as references such as CRITICAL READINGS IN TRANSLATION STUDIES edited by Mona Baker, and TRANSLATION IN THE DIGITAL AGE: NEW PERSPECTIVES IN TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETING STUDIES by Michael Cronin. Assessment: class participation and homework assignments (75%), and final exam (25%).
