Course Description: This course examines the characteristics of Magic Realism between the mid-19th and early 20th centuries, and analyzes the subversive nature of the works. The course presents key aspects of Magic Realism and its evolving form, and discusses various issues such as feminism, performance in society, and taboo topics seen in Angela Carter's short stories. The course also improves the ability to appreciate and analyze texts beyond the surfaces. Text: Angela Carter, BURNING YOUR BOATS: COLLECTED SHORT STORIES. Assessment: class participation (25%), presentations on assigned short stories (25%), and a 10-page final paper (50%).
